What is Screencasting?

  • Screencasting is a way of recording what you do on the computer.  It records everything you do on screen and it records your voice at the same time. You can use screencasts to flip your classroom, prepare lessons for sub days, catch up students who miss class, create tutorials, and more.
  • If you connect your document camera and have the image up on screen, you can record what is on the document camera.  That works well for recording instructions for how to create something or for math teachers to walk through how to solve a problem.
  • There are many different tools you can use to create screencasts.  I will show you a few different ways to create FREE and EASY screencasts.
  • Check out some of my examples of screencasts I have created for my students.

Screencastify is an easy to use screencasting tool. It is a Chrome Extension that can be added to your Google Chrome Browser. Just go to the Chrome Store to install it to your browser. Click the icon at the top of the browser and you can start recording right away. You can choose to be on screen at the same time or just the screen.  Screencasts can be uploaded to Google Drive, YouTube, or downloaded to your computer.

Google Hangouts on Air

Google Hangouts on Air is a way to have conversations, like Skype, but also be able to record your conversations for later viewing. Hangouts on Air are automatically streamed to YouTube. You can use these Hangouts to do a live session, or you can record it on your own to upload to YouTube to share with people at a later time. You can record your screen or your webcam, or both.

Snagit is a Google Chrome extension that lets you create screenshots, pictures of what is on your screen, or screencasts.  It is very easy to use and can be uploaded directly to your Google Drive account.

Screencast-O-Matic is a website that allows you to record screencasts.  Once you download and install software, it is a one click recording process.  The free version only allows up to 15 minutes of recording.  You can download your screencast, upload to a Screencast-O-Matic server, or YouTube.
